Yes, you can dress your dreadlocks up as much as you like! Beads and other random bits and pieces like shells or wood can go straight onto new dreads and are fine for any stage of the dreadlock journey. Good quality beads made from pottered clay, glass, stainless steel, crystals, gold and silver can be left in when washing and should last many years. Cheaper quality beads are fine too but these should be removed before washing or they may leave a stain on your dreadlock, just the same as cheap jewellery. Polymer clay should be removed before washing as it is more fragile. Make sure your beads fit snugly onto your dreadlocks so they don’t fall off.

Wraps are a lot of fun and there are many creative ways to achieve them. They are generally made with yarn, cotton, hemp, etc. and wrapped from the base of the dread to the tip. You can use many different colours, textures and styles to make your dreads pop and show the world your good vibrations. Wraps can only be added to mature dreadlocks usually 7+ months.

Firstly, don’t freak out and cut your locks off! Although lice are uncommon it does happen, more so if you have young children. If you are feeling unusually itchy have someone check your hair immediately, if you have them you want to catch them early. The best way to eliminate lice and kill eggs is with rubbing alcohol. Pour the rubbing alcohol over your scalp and dreads, then wrap in cling wrap and leave in for 20-30 minutes. This will kill both the lice and eggs. Thoroughly rinse and shampoo afterwards. Repeat this process 2 more times 3 days apart. Hot wash all bedding, vacuum couches and car seats. Be aware that rubbing alcohol is flammable so shampoo thoroughly. You can also use a tea tree shampoo as a general deterrent and a tea tree essential oil spray on pillows and couches to keep them at bay.

If you want to change the colour of your dreadlocks you can do so at any stage of the dreadlock journey. DO NOT rub bleach into the dread, it is difficult to get out and it can burn the hair and break the dreadlock off.
